On January 28-30 2011, I was blessed to be able to join Calvary Chapel Rosemead’s youth group on their winter retreat in Thousand Pines, Ca for the weekend. There was other church youth groups at the camp too. It was definitely a memorable weekend and a great kick off to start the new 2011! It was actually my first time ever going on a youth camp retreat type thing and it was definitely a blessed time.
The theme for the weekend was “Abounding in Love”. We studied the book of Jonah and it was a great encouragement to learn more about how God is slow to anger and really abounding in love (Jonah 4:2). I’ve always known that Jonah was swallowed by a fish and always thought that it was a punishment because of disobedience but it actually was to save him. Jonah disobeyed God when he choose to go to Tarshish rather than to speak the truth to the city of Nineveh, and on his way to Tarshish in a boat with other men, God casted a storm. Jonah knew it was because of his disobedience, so Jonah told the men to throw him into the ocean, and so they did, and instead of dying from drowning, he was swallowed by a fish that God prepared for him and survived. He was spit back out after 3 days and followed God’s command to go to Nineveh.
Through the many disobedient paths we may take, God still cries out for us and loves us no matter what. The story of Jonah is one of the many examples that shows God’s unfailing love towards the choices that disobey Him.
Along with studying the book of Jonah during Chapel, we had devotional times in our cabins where we got to know each other and discuss the story of Jonah, there was free time which included some outdoor activities (paintball, zipline, flag football, basketball, arts and crafts etc).
I enjoyed this retreat, since it was my first time, I really did not know what to expect. I loved the fellowship and was so encouraged by the youth, I got to know a few youth and to really hear their stories. It was definitely a blessing and an encouragement to keep seeking God and His will for my life (:
